If you read my blog frequently, then you know that we are big Doctor Who fans.  Pretty regularly, we've had a fellow Whovian join us for dinner and Sci-Fi on Saturday nights.  The first time we did this, I wanted very much to make something that was somehow related to Doctor Who.  What I found was this delightful recipe for a bow tie pasta salad.  Yes!  I know!  Bow ties for watching the Doctor, it really did seem brilliant.  And the salad was really good, to boot.  I made it once with bacon as the meat, and once with chicken.  While I generally prefer chicken in things, I think the bacon pulled the flavors together better.

8 oz. dry bow tie pasta
1 medium avocado
6 slices bacon
2/3 Cup fresh basil
2 Tbs lemon juice
1 Tbs olive oil
Garlic (minced cloves or some sort of garlic powder, you pick)
1/4 tsp ground black pepper
1/2 Cup finely shredded Italian* cheese
*The original recipe calls for Pecorino Romano cheese, but I couldn't find any.  I've concluded that any strong, hard Italian cheese should do nicely.  Or you can do without.  We forgot the cheese a couple times, and the salad was perfectly tasty without.

  1. Cook bacon until crispy.  Allow to drain on a paper towel.
  2. Cook bow ties according to package instructions
  3. Remove pit from avocados and coarsely chop the yummy green stuff
  4. Rip or chop fresh basil leaves
  5. Crumble bacon
  6. Combine prepared ingredients, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, and pepper.  Top with cheese if desired.
  7. Serve immediately or chill until you're ready.
